What Is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication made by a pharmaceutical company named Allergan. It is derived from botulinum toxin type A, a toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Its usefulness and popularity has grown a ton over the course of many years.

Botox was discovered by two Vancouver doctors, Jean and Alastair Carruthers, accidently in the year 1987. Before Botox or other injectable options were available, there were only invasive procedures, such as facelifts and other plastic surgery to achieve facial rejuvenation. Although there are few other botox options like Xeomin and Dysport, Botox has become the most popular and was the first injectable medication to use botulinum toxin to achieve results.

It has helped many people avoid invasive procedures and facial rejuvenation with every single treatment. While there are many locations for this service, Asha offers experience and precision, resulting in the best Botox results at her beautiful Sandy Springs Med Spa.

How Does Botox Work?

In extremely small doses, Botox is directly injected into the specific muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle. These areas include but are not limited to crow’s feet, the forehead, frown lines, and more.

Once the Botox is injected these isolated muscles are considered to be frozen. Certain nerves in the injected area are blocked stopping these muscles from contracting and leaving them relaxed. The final result is reduced wrinkles. Botox injections can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, all depending on the area injected, your day-to-day routine and how deep your wrinkles may be.

Another popular area that is treated with Botox is the brow area. This helps clients achieve a lift in the forehead resulting in a brow lift. Botox can be combined with other treatments, such as Juvéderm, and Sculptra, to help restore the youthful features of your face in a natural looking way.

When you receive your treatment, a numb cream may be applied on the area that will be treated. Then the Botox will be injected. The procedure doesn’t take long at all. Normally anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes, and you should notice full results in about a week or two.

Where Can I Receive Botox?

Areas in which Botox can be received have expanded over the years. In the beginning of the Botox phenomenon, it was only approved to be injected into the glabella lines, or furrows between the eyebrows. However, the need for Botox has grown and so has the areas within the muscular facial structure that can be treated, all of which Asha performs at Pure Bliss Med Spa in Sandy Springs:

  • Forehead lines or worry lines.
  • Glabella lines.
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes.
  • Neck lines or Cords.
  • Lines around the mouth.
  • Pau d’orange of the chin.
  • Frown lines around the mouth
  • Brow lift
  • Botox Masseter Reduction for Facial Slimming

Botox treatments have not only expanded in other areas of the face but also other areas of the body over the years as well. In the next section of this read you will find that the indications have broadened completely and are able to treat much more than just anti-aging concerns.

What Can Botox Treat?

Botox injections are not limited to the cosmetic world and can benefit many clients in more ways than before. Healthcare providers have been successful in using Botox for many other medical indications outside of aging prevention. Those medical indications including:

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain
  • Migraine Headaches:
  • Excessive Sweating or Hyperhidrosis
  • Depression
  • Overactive Bladder or Urinary Incontinence
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Blepharospasm
  • Cervical Dystonia
  • Strabismus
  • Contractures Pain from Cerebral Palsy (CP)

It is always best to speak with your healthcare provider first to see if you would be a good candidate for Botox.

Can Botox Remove All of My Wrinkles?

It’s important to set up realistic expectations for your Botox experience. Many come in with the idea that Botox completely removes all one’s wrinkles, but that is not the case. Botox does not get rid of all wrinkles on your face.

Botox gets rid of wrinkles made from expressions, specifically muscular expressions. It improves the appearance of these wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. It does not get rid of what we call static rhytides, the wrinkles that are visible when the face is resting. If those wrinkles bother you, there are other skin rejuvenating treatments such as laser genesis, microneedling, and laser needling that can help smooth them out.

How Early Can You Start Getting Botox?

To many’s surprise, Botox is not just for those who have already visibly experienced the signs of aging and trying to reverse it. In fact, it is actually suggested to start treatments early to help prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Especially if wrinkles are common in your family line. This approach in the world of cosmetics is called Baby Botox, also known as Micro-Botox or Preventative Botox. The goal with Baby Botox is to add volume to your facial appearance. But the best time to start Botox treatments for lines is when lines begin to stick around

When you smile or frown, lines may develop during the expression. They generally go away when the face is relaxed. However, when lines start to stick around at rest, that’s when you can consider getting initial Botox treatments. For some clients, this may be in their late 20s or early 30s. It is very rare to see clients any younger than that. But more individuals are exploring baby Botox for preventative reasons now more than ever.

Is Botox a Brand?

Botox may be the household name for the medical injection, but Botox is actually just one type of treatment on the market. Other brands include Dysport and Jeuveau. All three neurotoxins originate from the same strain of bacteria; therefore they work every similarly.

Xeomin is another version of the medical injection. It is a purified neurotoxin, called a “naked molecule”. This name derives from the Xeomin injection not containing any additional surface proteins like Dysport and Botox do. Xeomin actually migrates deeper into skin, works faster, and potentially poses less risk of an allergic reaction.

Dysport has been shown to spread a little more than Botox, making it good for areas that need multiple injections. It also kicks in faster, typically showing effects after two to three days as opposed to seven to ten days with Botox, and five to six days with Xeomin. All neurotoxin injections differ because they are all different. Therefore, consult with your provider to see which may be best for you.

What Can I Expect From Botox?

During the Procedure

Normally treatments don’t take any more than 15-20 minutes. But how long it may take can depend on which areas are being treated and the volume of Botox being used.

Numbing/Anesthesia is not needed being that the injection needle used for treatment is so fine. Your injector will pinpoint the precise areas on your face that require botox, making it a pretty quick and painless process. If you are nervous about feeling pain or discomfort, let the location you visit know in advance so there is proper planning to apply a numbing agent if needed.

During Recovery

There is no recovery time following a Botox treatment. You may feel residual soreness or swelling around the injection sites immediately after treatment, but it’s important not to rub or massage the area to prevent the injection from migrating. Some people find it helpful to apply a cold compress or take an over-the-counter painkiller like Tylenol to reduce swelling and discomfort, but all discomfort normally subsides 24 hours after treatment.

How Often Should You Get Botox?

Ideally, Botox treatments should be spread out every 3-5 months between touch ups. Most people get it every 3 months. Some can get away with treatments every 4 or 5 months. Typically, those individuals are maintaining a consistent skincare routine and regular treatments recommended by their aesthetician. But it is best to ask your provider their professional opinion on how often you should be getting treated and how to maintain lasting results.

Normally after 3 months, your body has metabolized the Botox that was injected to relax the facial muscles. With every client’s results varying, the exact amount of time it takes for Botox to settle is not the same for all. Normally the full effects of the Botox injections are visible two weeks post treatment.
