How It Works

Semaglutide is a type of medication known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, making it one of a group of medications that also includes Liraglutide, the active ingredient in Saxenda. GLP-1 receptor agonists affect two hormones created by your pancreas called insulin and glucagon, these hormones help you manage your blood sugar levels. By affecting these hormones, Semaglutide helps to slow down the emptying of your stomach and lower blood sugar levels, effectively helping you to feel fuller for longer and reducing your appetite for sustained weight loss.

Who Is It For?

Semaglutide is available for the treatment of adults, both men and women, who are obese or overweight. Additionally, it has also been FDA approved for weight loss in adolescents (ages 12 to 17) who are struggling to adopt healthy eating habits, and physical activity due to various conditions. If you are an individual who struggle with the following things then you are a candidate for Semaglutide injections:

• Adults who are obese – A BMI of 30 or more
• Adults who are overweight – A BMI of 27-29
• Adults who have at least one weight-related comorbid condition such as hypertension, diabetes type 2, or hyperlipidemia
• Adolescents 12 years and older with a BMI in the 95th percentile or greater

What are The Side Effects?

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms call your service provider  immediately or seek emergency medical treatment:

• Ongoing pain that begins in the upper left or middle of the stomach but may spread to the back, with or without vomiting
• Rash; itching; swelling of the eyes, face, mouth, tongue, or throat; or difficulty breathing or swallowing
• Decreased urination
• Swelling of legs, ankles, or feet
• Vision changes
• Fainting or dizziness
• Pain in upper stomach; yellowing of skin or eyes; fever; or clay-colored stools (in those receiving semaglutide for management of weight loss)
• Rapid heartbeat

Semaglutide injection may cause other side effects. Call your service provider if you have any unusual problems while using this medication.

How Much Weight Can I Lose?

A significant amount of weight can be lost when taking semaglutide for weight loss. In one study, adults who took semaglutide for 16 weeks lost an average of 16.5 pounds. In another study, it was shown to help people lose an average of 9.2% of their body weight after 56 weeks. For those taking semaglutide for health reasons.

Another study shows that semaglutide reduced blood glucose levels by 22% when fasting, 36% two hours after eating a meal, and 22% over 24 hours. Insulin secretion typically occurs in two phases following a meal, and semaglutide increases both first and second phase insulin secretion. Although some may lose more or less weight depending on how well they respond to semaglutide.
