Are you struggling with acne scars, skin irregularities, pockmarks, or hyperpigmented imperfections? Despite various skin care regimens, many people can not avoid the scarring left by acne and comedones. Acne scars can cause extreme distress, low self-esteem, and unnecessary self consciousness. Acne scarring can range from grade 1- macular scarring with erythematous hyper pigmented flat marks, grade 2 – mild scarring with mild atrophy or hypertrophy barely noticeable unless up close, grade 3 – moderate hypertrophic acne scarring noticeable to the naked eye and will flatten with manual stretching of the skin, grade 4 – severe scarring which is obvious to the naked eye and not flattened my manual stretching of the skin.

First Line- Topical Treatments

1. Topical products such as medicated cleansers, toners, and gels to prevent acne formation are first line to avoiding acne scars. Constantly using sunscreen and avoiding direct sunlight is also key to preventing or worsening hyperpigmentation. To treat hyperpigmentation use of topical treatments such as retinoids and hydroquinone will lighten acne scarring and likely completely diminish mild acne scarring.

Second Line– Second Line therapy includes in office procedures to manually exfoliate the skin and reduce or diminish hyperpigmentation.

2. Microdermabrasion can smooth skin and reduce the appearance of acne scars. Microdermabrasion uses a minimally abrasive device to sand the skin. The top layer of the skin is manually exfoliated removing the thick, uneven outer layer of skin to reveal a smooth, vibrant under layer of fresh skin. Skin is left glowing! With repeated treatments scars diminish and skin is replenished. Microdermabrasion works best in combination with a more aggressive approach such as chemical peels.

2. Superficial Chemical Peels are very effective in acne scarring and hyperpigmented scars. Chemical peels include glycolic, salicylic, lactic, retinol, TCA, or jessner peels. Chemical peels must be used cautiously and administered by a skin care professional experienced in the effects of chemical peels. If chemical peels are used in higher concentration or too aggressively it can result in hyper pigmentation.

Third Line- MicroNeedling and Laser Treatments for Skin Resurfacing

4. MicroNeedling treatments can provide significant results and drastically improve the appearance of scars. The micro needles create hundreds of microscopic tiny punctures in the skin, that is in no way damaging to the skin. The punctures are not visible, but penetrate into deeper layers of the skin stimulating the dermis to rebuild collagen and elastin, improving blood supply to the area, and rebuilding skin that is damage and scarred. By micro needling and puncturing the skin its breaks up the fibrous tissue and causes scar tissue to grow newer tissue. Microneedling keeps the epidermis (superficial layer of the skin) completely intact. There is very little down time and quick healing time with no pain and no aggressive damage to the skin.

5. Laser Genesis is a non-ablative, non-invasive laser with no downtime. Well known for its effectiveness in skin rejuvenation. Laser Genesis penetrates deep into the dermal tissue where collagen is produced to promote collagen formation. Ultimately reducing the appearance of scars, uneven skin textures, shrinks enlarged pores, and kills bacteria in sebaceous glands to prevent acne breakouts. Laser Genesis is often used in combination with microneedling for a safe and effective skin resurfacing treatment with very little downtime and little to no pain or discomfort.
